Myanmar's military, the Tatmadaw, has ruled Myanmar (also known as Burma) for most of its post-independence period. It is deeply distrustful of democracy and the idea of civilian political control. Following a brief period of civilian rule from 2011, the Tatmadaw orchestrated a coup against civilian head of state Aung San Suu Kyi in early 2021. The military is extremely unpopular with the country's civilian population, which has been engaged in a massive campaign of civil disobedience. The Tatmadaw junta's harsh crackdowns in response have left thousands of civilians dead, injured or incarcerated and driven over one million to flee the country. The civil disobedience campaign is ongoing with no signs of a resolution.
